PROBLEM

Casual staffing in hospitality is a perfect storm of last-minute rosters, award-rate complexity and cash-flow anxiety. Venues scramble to fill gaps, workers juggle multiple gigs, and both sides shoulder the risk of delayed pay or non-compliant contracts. Marketplace start-ups usually struggle with the cold-start problem, and even when they gain traction, high fees, slow payouts and one-size-fits-all policies leave users frustrated. Clipboard wanted to unlock the earning power of its 100 K-plus network but needed a platform that could scale fast, calculate award wages on the fly and survive the crush of thousands of simultaneous users—without enterprise-grade overheads.

Mayfly architected Choosey on Bubble.io with a modular, low-code stack that hides complexity behind two taps. Smart shift-tracking lets managers amend start times, overtime and break changes mid-service, while a custom payments rail settles wages instantly at shift end, sidestepping the week-long pay cycles that plague other apps. A rules engine codifies award rates, qualifications and right-to-work checks so every booking is legally watertight, and de-identification protocols keep personal data secure while still fuelling real-time job matching.

HOW WE GOT THERE

Tapping Clipboard’s existing community solved the supply-and-demand chicken-and-egg in a single stroke, freeing the team to focus on performance. Database schemas were rebuilt for lightning-fast queries; workflows were stripped to their essentials; load-tests pushed the platform past thousands of concurrent sessions with headroom to spare. Continuous feedback from founders Brendan Leeds and Tipu Aamir refined edge cases—late arrivals, mid-shift extensions, cancelled gigs—into intuitive two-click updates that sync across worker, venue and payroll views. With Mayfly’s capital and product coaching, beta venues filled shifts in minutes and contractors withdrew earnings on the tram ride home.
